Beyond the Bookshelf: Improving Your Info Literacy

By Shahril Effendi Ibrahim

Introduction

In today’s digital age, information is everywhere. But knowing how to find, evaluate, and use it effectively is a skill that’s becoming increasingly essential. This is especially true for students in Open, Distance, and Digital Education (ODDE) who rely heavily on online resources.

The Importance of Information Literacy

Information literacy is more than just knowing how to use a search engine. It involves:

  • Identifying Information Needs: Knowing what information you need and when you need it.
  • Locating Resources: Finding reliable and relevant information from online databases, libraries, and other sources.
  • Evaluating Sources: Determining the credibility and reliability of information.
  • Using Information Effectively: Understanding citation rules and avoiding plagiarism.

Why is Information Literacy Crucial for ODDE Learners?

  • Independent Learning: Information literacy empowers ODDE learners to take control of their education and learn at their own pace.
  • Problem-Solving: Being able to find and use information effectively helps students solve problems and overcome challenges.
  • Academic Success: Strong information literacy skills are essential for academic success, especially in ODDE programmes.

The ILW Series: Empowering OUM Learners

To equip OUM learners with these essential skills, the Tan Sri Dr Abdullah Sanusi Digital Library launched the Information Literacy Workshop Series (ILW Series). These workshops, offered both online and in-person, are open to all OUM learners. They cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Library Orientation: Learning how to navigate the library and its resources.
  • Online Database Training: Using online databases to find scholarly articles, books, and other materials.
  • Postgraduate Library Training: Specific training for postgraduate students.
  • Information Skills Clinics: Personalised help and guidance.
  • Citation Style Training: Learning how to properly cite sources in your writing.

The Impact of the ILW Series

Since its launch, the ILW Series has helped thousands of OUM learners develop their information literacy skills. So far this year, more than 1,350 OUM learners have participated in the Series. External experts and trainers from online database providers such as Emerald, ProQuest, and Elsevier ClinicalKey Nursing have also been invited to contribute as trainers.

By providing comprehensive training and support, the series is empowering students to become more confident, independent, and successful learners.

Conclusion

Information literacy is a vital skill for everyone, but it’s especially important for our learners. We want OUM students to develop this essential skill so that they can succeed in their academic pursuits.
