Campus News: Bringing the Joy of Learning to Orang Asli children in Kuala Lipis

A team from OUM recently conducted a “Learning is Fun” programme for the Orang Asli community at Perkampungan Asli Pos Lanai, Kuala Lipis, Pahang, bringing smiles and valuable resources. Held at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lanai on 22 February, the event themed Jiwa Komuniti Madani (Community Spirit) reached over 150 Semai Orang Asli community members.

Empowering Through Education and Support

Held in collaboration with the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA), SK Lanai’s Parent-Teacher Association, OUM’s Kuala Lipis Learning Centre, and Abaro Shoes Malaysia, the programme focused on enhancing education and supporting local families.

Highlights of the Day

  • Educational Activities: The schoolchildren were presented with engaging interactive learning and student motivation sessions.
  • Parenting Talk: The parents learnt about the importance of supporting their children’s education.
  • School Supplies: Essential school supplies were given to 80 students at the school hostel.
  • Food Baskets: Food baskets were also contributed to 20 underprivileged families from five nearby villages.

A Commitment to Rural Communities

“This programme aims to enhance the quality of education and empower the local community,” shared OUM President/Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang.

SK Lanai Headmaster, Rosman Salleh, welcomed OUM’s efforts, describing the initiative as having a significant impact on the school and nearly 200 students from Years One to Six.

Looking Ahead: OUM Adopts SK Lanai

Following the successful event, OUM plans to adopt the school as part of its long-term commitment. According to Prof Izanee, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will take place once approval is obtained from the Lipis District Education Office.

This partnership signifies OUM’s dedication to supporting the educational journey of the Orang Asli community.
