Campus News – Celebrating Nurses Day 2025 at OUM

On 12 June, the Faculty of Technology & Health Sciences (FTAS) hosted its annual Nurses Day Celebration. The faculty’s Dean, Assoc Prof Dr Raziana Che Aziz, gave the welcoming speech, followed by a speech by Prof Datin Dr Santhi Raghavan, OUM’s Vice President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learner Experience and Technology). Her speech was aligned with the global theme for this year: “Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.”

Among others, she said: “Caring for nurses is not an expense – it’s an investment in a healthier, more sustainable future. To every nurse here, whether you’re in this hall or joining us online – we see you. We appreciate you. And we thank you for all that you do. Nursing isn’t just about medical care. You bring comfort and calm in chaos. Often, you are the one holding a patient’s hand when no one else can.  You are there during emergencies, late-night shifts, home visits, and community clinics – doing work that’s often unseen, but always deeply felt. That’s why today is important. It shines a light on not just your skills, but also your heart, dedication, and strength.”

She stressed the importance of preparing nurses who are digitally literate, confident in new systems, and ready to adapt, highlighting how OUM’s Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Nursing programmes meet the demands of modern healthcare while offering the flexibility that working professionals need.

The opening speech was given by Puan Shareena Bibi Mohd Arif, Chief Assistant Director of Nursing at the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Her presence added a national perspective to the occasion, and reinforced the country’s vision of advancing nursing excellence.

The next highlight was a forum session moderated by FTAS lecturer Ms Joemmaicca Augustta Joggery. The panel included Dr Siti Fatimah Md Shariff, Programme Director of OUM’s Doctor of Nursing Programme; Puan Shareena Bibi; and Prof Dr Chong Mei Chan from the Department of Nursing Science at Universiti Malaya. The forum brought to life a thoughtful and energetic conversation about the well-being of nurses.

Three outstanding student awards were also presented – to Linarose Lurthusamy (Doctor of Nursing), ‘Aqilah binti Abd Rahim (Master of Nursing), and Lainny binti Mohd Fudzi (Bachelor of Nursing Science with Honours).

Happy Nurses Day 2025 – to all the nurses making a difference every day, in ways both seen and unseen.
