Master the Knowledge of Islamic Studies at OUM
By Dr Hamidah Mat
If you are looking for postgraduate programmes in Islamic Studies, we are currently offering two: Master in Islamic Studies (MIST) and Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Studies (PGDIS).
Both programmes, which are under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, aim to develop expertise in key areas of Islamic studies, such as Shariah (Islamic law), Usuluddin (theology), dakwah (Islamic preaching), and civilisation.
Do you qualify?
MIST and PGDIS are open to holders of recognised bachelor’s degrees in Islamic Studies/Shariah/Usuluddin/Arabic Language or equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 out of 4.00. If you have a lower CGPA, you can still get in if you have sufficient work experience and/or non-formal/informal learning in Islamic Studies.
You can also use the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) to take up PGDIS or MIST. You’ll require learning and work experience or involvement in Islamic Studies-related community activities, and at least an STPM certificate or diploma.
How do PGDIS and MIST differ?
PGDIS differs from MIST in terms of duration, focus, and curriculum. PGDIS takes only 1 year to complete, while MIST takes 2 years.
PGDIS is suitable for professionals who require advanced knowledge in Islamic Studies and will enable you to learn Islamic Studies in a structured and organised manner. It can also be considered a stepping stone to MIST, as PGDIS graduates could apply for credit transfers for selected courses if they enrol in MIST after completing their studies. Credit transfer can shorten the study duration and reduce the cost.
MIST, meanwhile, is the choice for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of Islamic Studies at a higher level. You are required to conduct research using recognised research methodologies and complete a research paper. MIST graduates could continue their studies at the doctoral level, not only at OUM but also at public and private higher education institutions throughout the country.
How will you learn?
You will learn through the myINSPIRE platform, which facilitates interaction between students, tutors, and peers. You will attend online classes conducted after office hours and on weekends, so you can have discussions with your instructors even if you are working. The online classes are recorded so you can watch them again anytime. Learning materials in the form of e-modules and video recording are also provided for students.
All these make it possible to learn anytime, anywhere. On average, our alumni have great appreciation for our flexible learning system, which is suitable for working adults.
Will you get added value?
Our programmes are continuously updated in terms of quality and relevance to current needs. The faculty comprises experts in relevant fields, and contemporary issues are integrated into the learning and assessment. We also seek to fulfil your knowledge needs and provide essential skills such as creative thinking and problem-solving that you can apply after graduation. Ultimately, we want to ensure that our graduates are competent and able to enter the industry with confidence.
