Programme of the Month: Bachelor of OSH Management

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed on 28 April each year, led by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote safer and healthier workplaces. The 2025 theme, “Revolutionising health and safety: The role of AI and digitalisation at work,” focuses on how technology is transforming the way risks are managed and safety standards are maintained. Across industries, AI and digital tools are reshaping how work is done, bringing new ways to make workplaces safer, smarter, and more efficient.

How Technology Enhances Safety

AI is helping workplaces predict risks before accidents happen. Through machine learning, systems can now detect unsafe patterns by analysing data from sensors, equipment, and worker behaviours. Wearable devices can alert workers in real time if they enter hazardous zones or if their body temperature rises to unsafe levels. Smart cameras can spot unsafe acts on the floor and notify supervisors immediately. Digital dashboards give managers better tools to monitor conditions, track inspections, and respond faster to incidents.

Training Through Simulation

Digitalisation is also changing how workers are trained. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) simulations offer safe spaces for workers to practise handling dangerous tasks without exposure to real risks. These technologies make training more engaging and practical, preparing workers more effectively for real-world situations.

Yet, technology alone cannot guarantee a safer workplace. Human judgment, critical thinking, and a strong safety culture remain at the heart of effective risk management. Workers and safety officers must know how to use new tools, interpret data correctly, and make sound decisions that protect lives.

Shaping Safety Professionals

As workplaces evolve, so must the professionals who protect them. At OUM, the Bachelor in Occupational Safety and Health Management programme equips students with the knowledge and skills to meet safety challenges in both traditional and technology-driven environments.

The programme covers core areas such as hazard control, risk assessment, accident investigation, and workplace safety leadership. While students may not work directly with the newest technologies, the programme helps them understand how digitalisation and AI are reshaping industries. They are encouraged to develop awareness of current trends, preparing them to adapt and apply new safety practices as workplaces continue to change.

BOSHM also emphasises critical thinking, effective communication, and the management of safety systems in diverse industries. These skills are essential for working alongside digital monitoring systems, data-driven safety tools, and future innovations that aim to reduce risks and protect workers.

About the BOSHM Programme

It is fully accredited by the MQA, recognised by the Public Service Department (JPA), and recently earned Certified Membership accreditation from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) UK. It packs a solid curriculum with key subjects like OSH management systems, process safety, risk management, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, emergency and trauma care, quality management, HR, and change management.

You can enrol through the conventional academic route (STPM, STAM, matriculation, foundation, or diploma) or through APEL.A, which considers your work experience: https://apel.oum.edu.my

To shorten your study time, you may apply for APEL.C, which offers credit transfers for relevant courses. The programme carries 120 credit hours and typically takes about 4.5 years (13 semesters) to complete if there are no credit exemptions.

Learning materials are provided or available on loan, including specially-developed modules, e-textbooks, study guides, video lectures, audiobooks, and e-lessons. Students also have access to OUM’s extensive physical and digital libraries.

As the role of technology in safety continues to grow, the BOSHM programme ensures graduates are ready to face the future of work with competence and confidence.
