Early childhood education isn’t just about teaching kids their ABCs anymore. Now, it is a dynamic field that demands knowledgeable, skilled, and forward-thinking professionals. We need people who can tackle diverse challenges and truly make a difference.
That’s where our PhD (Early Childhood Education) comes in. This programme seeks to produce early childhood educators who are not only brilliant academics but also capable of shaping the future of early childhood care and education, both in Malaysia and beyond.
What Makes Our PhD(ECE) Special?
Many Malaysian universities offer fantastic PhD programmes in ECE that are purely research-based. But we offer something a little different: a mixed-mode model.
This means you get the best of both worlds. A full 30% of the programme involves taught courses, with the remaining 70% dedicated to your thesis work. This balanced approach provides a more guided and holistic learning journey, especially perfect for working adults who prefer a structured academic experience over a completely independent research path.
Real-World Learning for Real-World Impact
The coursework isn’t just theory; it’s designed to tackle the real issues facing the early childhood sector today.
For example, a course like Advanced Early Childhood Curriculum and Pedagogical Leadership will equip you to lead and innovate in designing and delivering curricula that truly benefit young children. Another crucial subject, Challenging Behaviours, Mental Health, and Well-being in Young Children, dives deep into growing concerns around children’s emotional development – including the impact of digital screen time, poor nutrition, and changing family structures.
These courses are carefully crafted to ensure that when you graduate, you’re not just a researcher but also a thought leader and problem-solver in your professional life.
Flexible Learning for Busy Lives
One of the biggest advantages of this programme is its flexible open and distance learning (ODL) delivery. This is a game-changer for working professionals, parents, or those living in rural areas or even abroad.
You’ll have access to a wealth of resources, from engaging video lectures and eBooks to eLessons and learning kits. Plus, the programme includes 10 online classes supported by a fully virtual learning environment, so you can truly engage with the content wherever you are.
Strong Academic Support
The programme also prioritises strong academic support. You’ll receive personalised supervision from experienced faculty members, and regular research workshops and colloquiums will help you refine your thesis topic and methodology.
Leading the academic team is Dr Mahani Abdul Malik, an ECE veteran with over three decades of experience. She’s been a teacher and preschool owner for 14 years and serves as Programme Director for both the Master and PhD in ECE programmes at OUM. Dr Mahani is also a recognised assessor for the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and has even consulted for various local and international children’s programmes, including those on Cartoon Network!
Comprehensive Foundation for Growth
The PhD(ECE) is built on five core areas, providing a comprehensive foundation for professional practice:
- Child Development
- Curriculum and Learning Environments
- Administration and Management
- Families and Communities
- Professional Development
These areas ensure graduates can respond to the diverse needs of children, families, institutions, and the wider educational system.
Open to Experience
The programme has inclusive entry requirements that value real-world experience. While a master’s degree in ECE or a related field is typically needed, we also consider applicants with relevant professional experience and a diploma in ECE, in appreciation of both academic qualifications and professional contributions to the field.
More Than Just a Degree: A Call to Action
At its heart, this programme has four key objectives:
- To produce graduates with cutting-edge knowledge in ECE.
- To cultivate professionals with caring personalities and an entrepreneurial mindset.
- To encourage graduates to meaningfully engage with families, communities, and regulatory bodies.
- To advocate for ethical and sustainable practices in early childhood settings.
Spanning 4 years and totalling 80 credits, this PhD programme is much more than just a qualification; it’s a call to action. It invites educators, researchers, and practitioners to step forward and become change-makers in ECE. The PhD(ECE) provides the tools, support, and inspiration you need to turn your passion into impact and your vision into reality.
