If you put a child in front of a fun experiment or a clever puzzle, you might see it instantly – their eyes will light up, they will lean in, and they will try their best to solve it. Suddenly Science, English, and Maths don’t feel so difficult anymore. Instead, they actually feel enjoyable!

That spark is exactly what we want for young Malaysians, because when learning is fun, children learn better without even realising it.

This is what we set out to do once again for 100 children through our Learning is Fun (LIF) programme at SK Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar in Gelang Patah, Johor Bahru, on 8 November.

Our academics led children from that school as well as from SK Tanjung Kupang, and SK Morni Pok in a lively day of games, puzzles, and hands-on experiments such as Circuit Spark, The Incredible Inflating Balloon, Matchstick Puzzle, Menara Matematik, Act & Solve, and Puppet Drama.

Every activity was designed to spark the children’s curiosity and show that Science, English, and Maths can be enjoyable to learn, and are not just boring school subjects.

The teachers weren’t left out either. They attended an AI and digital workshop to learn how to incorporate more creative and tech-driven methods into their classrooms, which will ultimately make their classes much more fun while still being educational.

According to President/Vice-Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang, the LIF programme reflects OUM’s strong commitment to its silver jubilee theme, “25 Years of Humanising Digital Education.”

The team included Assoc Prof Dr Tuan Fatma Tuan Sulaiman, our Registrar who also heads our CSR programmes; Assoc Prof Dr Raziana Che Aziz, Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Applied Sciences; Dr Ahmad Salahuddin M Azizan, Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities; Encik Fairul Ifnee Othman, Lecturer from the Faculty of Business & Management; Encik Mohd Lokman Abdullah and Puan Eti Fairudz Zainudin, Senior Lecturers from the Faculty of Education; and members of our Group Strategic Communication team.

LIF stands as one of OUM’s key CSR initiatives. By bringing engaging, meaningful educational activities directly into schools, OUM continues to reach out to communities and ensure that children in schools around Malaysia get to experience the joy of learning in a fun environment.
