Student Voice: My Experience as a Student with ADHD

In September 2023, I enrolled at OUM to begin my journey as a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours student. Psychology has long been one of my specific interests – something about the complexities of the human mind intrigues me.

I am a student with disabilities. I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) years ago when I was in my mid-30s. The realisation became clearer after two of my four daughters received their ADHD and ASD diagnoses.

ADHD is often associated with hyperactivity, but this is not always the case, especially in adults. Adults with ADHD tend to internalise the symptoms. The hyperactivity is seldom visible in behaviour; more often, it is in our minds as we grapple with racing thoughts and become distracted by our own internal dialogue.

The academic experience of students with ADHD is generally perceived to be negatively impacted by online learning. Factors include reduced social interaction, increased procrastination leading to time management issues, and low external pressure, which ultimately decreases academic performance.

However, my experience studying at OUM has been positive. I find that the flexible and remote learning environment suits a student with ADHD like me for the following reasons:

Recorded lectures: E-tutorial classes are normally held at night to accommodate employed students. I often struggle to focus in class when the medication I take in the morning has worn off. The main medication for ADHD is a stimulant, so it cannot be taken in the evening as it would disturb sleep. To compensate, I watch the recorded lectures during the day when I am medicated, adjusting the speed to 2x (the ADHD brain favours fast-paced videos). I still attend the live e-tutorials and take the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with e-tutors.

Technology-assisted learning: Course materials, discussion forums, and other resources can be accessed on one platform – myINSPIRE. This helps tremendously for those who struggle with disorganisation. The e-tutorial schedule syncs with our Google Calendar and sends automatic reminders when classes are about to start.

Social support: The staff at OUM are very helpful. Once, I misunderstood an instruction and missed the deadline to register courses for the following semester. The staff in charge kindly helped me resolve the issue. My e-tutor for ABPG1103 Introduction to Psychology, Puan Hilwa Muhammad, was aware of my diagnosis. So in every e-tutorial, she would check on me by asking, “Nazreen, are you okay? Do you have any questions?” I would always come to her class prepared for my name to be called. OUM also provides counselling services for students who need additional support.

The inclusive learning environment at OUM encourages people with disabilities (PWD) to pursue tertiary education. I truly appreciate OUM’s efforts in accommodating us.
