A Food Scientist’s Triumph
I grew up in Kuala Lumpur with three siblings. My family always encouraged me to study hard and learn as much as possible.
After getting a B. Sc (Hons) in Food Science & Nutrition, I became really interested in the research and development (R&D) of new food products. I enjoyed experimenting with different ingredients and processes to create delicious and marketable foods.
When the Covid-19 pandemic showed up, working in R&D became very difficult for me. Our production schedules were messed up by shortages of supplies and huge price increases.
Shipping delays meant we couldn’t get the raw materials we needed on time. I realised how important good project management is, especially in unpredictable situations.
We needed experts who could manage resources well and lead teams through unexpected problems.
Then, in December 2020, my life took another unexpected turn – I was involved in a serious accident at work. While conducting a pilot run of a new product, I had my thumb inadvertently cut by a machine, resulting in a permanent disability. Besides the physical injury, the accident really shook my confidence. I went through a period of insecurity and self-doubt.
But I didn’t stay down for long – I decided to use this experience as a chance to develop and get better. So in 2021, after 16 years of working, I decided to get a Master in Project Management from OUM.
This decision really changed my life. It opened up new career opportunities, and also helped me discover strengths and interests that I didn’t know I had before.
You can’t imagine how thrilled I was when I graduated with a CGPA of 4.0!
My formula for success was: PASS – Persistent x Adaptable x Self-Motivated x Study
- Persistent: I made a schedule, set deadlines, and made time for classes, studying, work, and personal life.
- Adaptable: I was open to new ideas and adapted to changes in my field of study.
- Self-motivated: This meant staying focused on my goals and pushing through challenges.
- Study: I took good notes, engaged in active learning, and asked for help when needed.
My OUM experience gave me not only specialised knowledge and skills but also a valuable network of classmates, lecturers, tutors, and other professionals that will impact my life for a long time.
In August 2023, I was recognised as a Professional Technician by the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT). This means I can now certify and approve how technical services are done. This has motivated me to keep driving innovation in the food industry.
I believe in giving back to society, so for several years now, I’ve been volunteering at a local animal shelter. This has been a really rewarding use of my free time. I care deeply about animals so it’s satisfying to do something to improve their lives. I’d encourage anyone to find a volunteering opportunity they’re passionate about.
My final words?
Believe in yourself.
How you see yourself affects how you treat yourself, and how you treat yourself shapes who you become.
