The 29th Convocation wasn’t just about celebrating graduates – it also marked a fresh chapter for OUM alumni. On 4 May, the second day of the convocation, Persatuan Alumni OUM (PAOUM) was officially launched.
Organised by the Centre for Alumni Relations (CAR), the launch of the association drew 46 alumni to the event. In her welcome address, CAR Director Laila Sukma Ngah shared a brief history of earlier alumni efforts.
“We had an alumni unit around 2010, but it wasn’t sustainable,” she said. “A few years ago, a pro tem committee took over, but that effort also didn’t last. Still, both initiatives laid the groundwork for what we’re doing today.”
“Now, we’re back – stronger, more structured, and joined by alumni from diverse backgrounds who are committed to making this a success.”
OUM has produced over 120,000 alumni in Malaysia and abroad, spanning various industries – a powerful network ready to be united under one platform. To support this, CAR has developed an alumni portal and information management system, enabling alumni to register, update their details, join events, and stay informed on university events and activities.
“But even the best system needs people to drive it,” said Laila. “That’s where PAOUM comes in – not just as a formal body, but as an active community that can support students, build industry links, contribute to society, and give back to OUM.”
The launch was officiated by Assoc Prof Dr Raziana Che Aziz, Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Applied Sciences. She highlighted that with 37,000 active learners, OUM continues to earn the trust of working adults.
“We value our alumni as more than former students – you are our ambassadors. Your success reflects ours. That’s why PAOUM is such a timely and important step.”
She also shared that OUM offers special fee packages for alumni who wish to pursue further studies. “With the foundation you’ve built here, there’s no limit to how far you can go.”
The event’s highlight was the appointment of eight alumni as the pro tem committee, led by Dr Shamsul Zuraimi Mat Shah – a Doctor of Education graduate from the 28th Convocation – as president. This committee will drive PAOUM’s growth and strengthen the bond between OUM and its alumni.
Congratulations to the newly appointed team!
