A degree should do more than add letters after your name – it should open doors, sharpen your skills and help you excel at work. From the newsroom to the data centre, the classroom to the boardroom, these 10 graduates show how their qualifications have made a real difference in their careers.
I have always had a passion for writing. At OUM, I had the opportunity to study journalism in greater depth. I completed my internship at the Sarawak Tribune, where I now work. There were times when I had to defer my studies because of responsibilities and circumstances I could not avoid. I’m grateful that OUM gave me the flexibility and support to return and complete my course. My studies have had a significant impact on my career. Classes on news writing and reporting, editing, politics, and communication law strengthened my understanding of the issues journalists cover and the responsibilities that come with the profession.

Daughter of His Excellency the Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar
My studies have strengthened my confidence in tackling quality challenges in the semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry. I can now analyse data, identify root causes, and develop effective improvement plans. I applied the Six Sigma DMAIC approach to improve material handling and packaging processes, helping to reduce product rejection cases. The knowledge I gained has also strengthened my decision-making and communication when working across departments on quality improvement initiatives.
Senior Quality Engineer
My work involves monitoring systems, handling incidents, and troubleshooting issues. If a server goes down or a system alert comes in, I’m better able to understand the issue from the network, database and application sides, instead of looking at it only as a hardware or operational problem. This enables me to communicate more effectively with the relevant teams and support troubleshooting. Overall, my qualification has given me more confidence and opened up opportunities to take on bigger responsibilities.
Data Centre Operations Engineer
Completing my master’s at the age of 42 was challenging, but it has further strengthened my counselling, communication and public speaking skills. In my work at Seven Skies International School in Selangor, I am able to draw on the knowledge, techniques and theories I have gained to enhance the support I provide to students and staff. Overall, my studies have enriched my ability to contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of the school community.

Although I was already a primary school teacher, studying Early Childhood Education has given me a better understanding of how children think, learn, and develop. The knowledge I gained has helped me become more aware of my students’ different needs and encouraged me to create a more engaging and supportive classroom environment. This qualification has been a valuable addition to my teaching journey and professional growth.
Primary School Teacher
My master’s has given me the research edge to solve complex tech problems and build practical strategies for clients at IBM Singapore. Now, I’m taking that same confidence straight into my PhD, also at OUM.

I developed a web-based Studio Booking System for the DJs at my workplace, RTM Bintulu. Seeing it being used at work proves that what I learned can be applied to real work situations.

Resumes only tell half the story. I can now better evaluate personality and real drive, helping candidates and clients hit a true win-win.

OUM provided the flexibility I needed to turn a long-held hope into reality. Today, my husband and I are both proud OUM alumni.

My bachelor’s degree has strengthened my understanding of business management, corporate governance and organisational processes, which I can now apply directly to my work at TNB Research Sdn Bhd, particularly in supporting Board meetings and matters. I can also provide more informed and effective support to the Managing Director, while contributing beyond my administrative responsibilities.
