Standing Tall with 100 Trees
We have joined the Greening Malaysia Campaign’s race to plant 100 million trees by 2025!
On 26 May, OUM teamed up with the Sabah Forestry Department and the 4×4 Tawau Club to plant 100 native forest tree seedlings and local fruit trees at Hutan Simpan Tajong in Tawau.
This is our “Save Our Earth” corporate social responsibility programme, which we hope will go some way towards helping the country reach its greening goal.
A total of 80 participants, including staff, alumni, and students, joined this activity along with the local community. Also present were OUM President/Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang and OUM’s senior management.
Said Prof Izanee, “Today, we managed to plant 100 trees. This is a small contribution from OUM towards environmental conservation in the country. We hope that through this programme, we can contribute towards the goal of planting 100 million trees nationwide by 2025. We aim to plant 2,500 trees by 2025, to coincide with our 25th anniversary next year.”
The programme coordinator Jeffry Onn Hamzah, who is also the Tawau Learning Centre Director, highlighted the importance of collaboration.
“We encouraged the involvement of our students and collaborative partners. From OUM, we have participation from five Learning Centres in Tawau, Keningau, Sandakan, Kota Marudu, and Lahad Datu, along with a delegation from the Main Campus.”
Tuan Haji Mohd Ekbal Khalid, a Bachelor of Management and Master of Management alumnus, said the current generation needs to conserve the environment for future generations.
“Today’s students are focused on their studies. We need to instil the spirit of environmental conservation in them. If we don’t undertake programmes like this, the next generation may not be able to see the greenery of this world.”
The Greening Malaysia Campaign runs from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025. As of this month, about 10 million more trees need to be planted to reach the national goal. This ambitious campaign involves government agencies, departments, and the private sector.
